Things aren’t always as they appear. A picture for a little child can appear to be a monster coming out of the sea only to discover that it is really a picture of a sailing ship on the ocean at night. A vase bought at a flea market for a few dollars turns out to be worth thousands because of its heritage.
So it is with Psalm 23. It sounds like a simple poem of comfort and reassurance (which it does provide) but there is much more. We sometimes forget it was originally a song. People may not know that the author was King David in the Old Testament, who led a tumultuous life and whose life was often threatened. People also may not know that David was a shepherd boy before becoming king and knew that world very well. We may not realize that there are hidden depths that we don’t see at first glance. It also isn’t obvious initially that there is movement within the song toward some of life’s most difficult moments.
As you go through this sermon series, notice how each line of the song has unexpected depth and meaning. This is one of the most personal promises from God to you. Enjoy.
