Keeping promises isn’t always easy and yet, the ramifications of breaking one can last a lifetime. In scripture, promises were much more than a simple pledge, but had relational elements attached to them. These promise-keeping relationships were referred to as a ‘covenant’ and helped define the dynamics between two or more parties. Covenants were serious business and God made them with his people as a way of giving hope, confidence, and accountability. In fact, keeping promises is central to what it means for God to be a God of love.
